"Exclusive Lane and Road Safety"

Blog

Have you ever found yourself driving on a road that lacks basic but crucial signage? You're cruising along, unsure if you're heading in the right direction or even the name of the street due to the absence of signs. And just when you least expect it, a cyclist rides alongside you, risking injury due to the lack of an exclusive lane that could be clearly marked with "Hersan Road Buoys." Or you approach the corner of an avenue with no pedestrian crosswalks, which could easily be indicated by "Road Buttons" or even "Speed Bumps" (also known as speed humps).

Well, with this simple explanation, you can grasp the significance of these seemingly simple examples that are critical for reducing commute times for everyone and avoiding risks for both road users (pedestrians and drivers). It also ensures the financial stability of the transport companies themselves.

According to SETRAVI's 2012 official program, the goal was to create 60 public transport corridors in Mexico City, replacing the humble microbuses with new ones under a scheme that eliminated vehicle concessions in favor of collective concessions by route, granted to transporters who chose to form companies.

This approach contrasts with the dedicated bus lanes of Metrobús, which can reach speeds of up to 23 kilometers per hour under controlled and safe operating conditions for users and pedestrians. This is why "Hersan" wants to emphasize that there were 20 critical zones in these corridors at the time, due to slow traffic (which, in a simple arithmetic projection, could result in 400 traffic conflict zones for the program's 60 corridors).

From another perspective, the current corridors show that even though transporters renew their units and form concessioned companies, they still travel on public routes in an inadequate manner due to the lack of ROAD CONDITIONS that would help improve service for their passengers. To illustrate, a single bus carries around fifty passengers who endure the same congestion as regular cars, with an average of at least two passengers each.

So, it's easy to deduce that an exclusive lane for Metrobús routes (or public transportation in any city) would significantly reduce travel times. And let's not forget about safety – it's significantly improved for users, drivers of public and private transportation with dedicated lanes.
